Lauren & Michael

As a second shooter at weddings, I have the privilege of capturing the behind-the-scenes moments, the intimate interactions, and the little details that sometimes go unnoticed. But when it comes to a fall wedding, there’s a special kind of magic in the air. The vibrant autumn leaves, the crisp air, and the warm colors create the perfect backdrop for a wedding day full of love and romance.

Recently, I had the opportunity to second shoot a stunning fall wedding, and I can’t wait to share how the changing leaves and autumn ambiance elevated the entire experience. From the golden tones of the trees to the cozy, intimate vibes of the celebration, this wedding was a true celebration of the season. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through my experience as a second photographer at this beautiful autumn wedding and highlight how the fall foliage added a unique touch to the couple’s special day.

Lauren and Michael's fall wedding was a true reflection of their love and the season they adore. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the warmth and excitement in the air. They chose a venue nestled in the heart of nature, surrounded by tall trees that were in full autumn splendor—rich reds, oranges, and yellows all around.

As a second photographer, my role was to support the lead photographer by capturing candid moments, details, and alternative perspectives. But the fall scenery provided the perfect opportunity to shoot wide-angle portraits, intimate couple shots, and stunning landscape photos that really showcased the natural beauty of the season.

One of the most exciting parts of second shooting a wedding in the fall is the ability to incorporate the natural surroundings into the photos. Autumn is a season that offers vibrant, rich colors that make for breathtaking wedding portraits. Here are a few ways we used the autumn leaves to enhance the couple’s wedding day photos:

1. Colorful Portraits with Fall Foliage

We made sure to take full advantage of the colorful leaves and golden light. The couple’s portraits were taken against the backdrop of trees dressed in shades of red, orange, and yellow. The leaves not only added a pop of color to the photos but also brought out the romantic, cozy feel of the season.

2. Romantic Couple Shots Under Falling Leaves

During the ceremony and reception, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and love, and I was able to capture intimate moments of the couple walking hand-in-hand beneath the colorful canopy. The autumn leaves gently falling around them created a romantic, almost cinematic feel to the shots.

3. Detail Shots Featuring Autumn Elements

The season also offered so many opportunities for capturing detail shots. I focused on elements like the floral arrangements, which incorporated autumn hues, and the couple’s table settings, which featured pumpkins, rustic elements, and deep-toned candles. These details helped create a cohesive story for the wedding day, all tying back to the beauty of the season.

As a second shooter, I’m often tasked with catching moments the lead photographer might not be able to capture, and the fall wedding setting offered some incredible opportunities to do just that.

1. The Bridal Party in the Autumn Landscape

While the lead photographer was capturing the couple’s first look and portraits, I took the opportunity to photograph the bridal party. The bridesmaids’ dresses, in deep plum and rich gold, popped beautifully against the colorful fall leaves. It was a great chance to capture fun, candid moments, like a playful spin or a quiet moment of reflection, all set against the stunning fall backdrop.

2. The Couple’s Quiet Moments

One of the most touching moments I captured was the couple walking together under the trees right after their ceremony. They shared a few quiet, intimate words, and I was able to shoot from a distance, preserving their privacy while still documenting the joy and emotions of the moment.

Tip for Second Photographers: Always be on the lookout for candid moments during the ceremony and reception. These quiet interactions between the couple can often tell the most beautiful stories of the day.

3. Reception Moments with Autumn Décor

As the evening progressed, I captured the reception’s warm and intimate ambiance. The couple had incorporated fall décor into their celebration, including candles, autumn leaves, and fairy lights. The warm golden glow of the lighting paired perfectly with the cozy atmosphere of the season. It made for some stunning reception photos, especially as the couple shared their first dance surrounded by loved ones.

Second shooting at this beautiful autumn wedding was an absolute joy. The combination of the couple’s love and the vibrant colors of the season created an unforgettable experience. From the intimate moments in the golden light to the beautiful portraits set against the backdrop of colorful leaves, every image captured the warmth and romance of a fall wedding.

As a photographer, there’s nothing quite like the energy of a fall wedding. The natural beauty of the season, combined with the excitement of a wedding day, creates magical photos that couples will cherish forever.
